How to Use the Map Guide

  1. Regions that require multiple volumes may include a Master Index of towns, showing in which volume a town will be found.
  2. Find the town in the Index. Other religions are covered in the “Other Churches” section of the Map Guide.
  3. Find the town name in the “Town Key” and note the Parish number.
  4. Match the Parish number in the “Parish Key” to identify the Parish name and Family History Library film number.
  5. View the Lutheran Parish map, or the Catholic Parish map. Maps show the adjacent parishes and districts. If you can’t find your ancestors in the local parish, you may find them in an adjacent parish, as well as other family members.

The Map Guide includes maps of each district showing the specific parishes and has a list of towns for each parish. These maps help identify parishes an ancestor might have attended if they did not attend the local church, and where the researcher might find other family members.
